Shine bright

You are like light for the whole world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl; instead he puts it on the lampstand, where it gives light for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine before people, so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5 : 14 - 16 (GNB)

Light is mentioned a lot in the Bible, and with good reason. Light isn't just a tool to save us from stumbling about in the dark, it is also the source of energy for all of us. As any scientist would tell you light is essential to life on Earth. Virtually all living things on the planet ultimately get their energy from light. This might be the plants themselves who convert the light into energy, and this energy is then passed up the food chain.

As well as this light can also be comforting, especially when you are in unknown places. Just think about it, when would you feel more comfortable walking down the streets of an unfamiliar town? On a bright and sunny day, or at the dead of night when it is dark.

Taking this into account it adds a great deal of significance to this week's passage. Not only are we being instructed to be something bright and noticeable. We are also being told to radiate life and energy to everyone around us. Also we should provide support and comfort to those who need it.

So being a light for the world doesn't mean plugging your fingers into the mains or covering yourself in glow in the dark paint. You can be a light simply through your actions, the way that you behave and interact with everyone around you. It might be something as simple as giving someone a smile as you pass them in the street or listening to a friend in need of a sympathetic ear.

It doesn't matter if it is winter or summer, whether it is sunny or raining, make sure you shine so brightly with GodÂ’s love that everyone around you is reaching for their sunglasses. Have a great week.
