Moving the goalpost

If you confess that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised him from death, you will be saved. For it is by our faith that we are put right with God; it is by our confession that we are saved. The scripture says, “Whoever believes in him will not be disappointed.”

Romans 10 : 9 - 11 (GNB)

Today's passage should give us all great comfort. As we have a God who is willing to accept and welcome us entirely on our belief in him. He does not judge us based on how well we have lived our lives, how good we have been or even what we have accomplished. To God believing and trusting in him is all that matters.

This is fantastic news for us and all mankind, as this gives us all the ability to get into heaven. Just think about it for a second… If it came down to how good you are, or the things you have achieved do you really think that you would be able to reach God's exacting standards?

Unless you are a superhumanly brilliant goody-two shoes the answer would be a resounding no! No matter how hard we try, none of us would ever be able to reach God’s entry criteria if it was based on works or behaviour.

Fortunately our God knew this, which is why he moved the goalposts completely to a level that we can all achieve. God sent his own perfect son (Jesus), his pride and joy to Earth to take the rap which would otherwise be rightfully ours. His death and resurrection opens up heaven to all of us, despite our weaknesses, despite the bad things we say and do.

All we need to do is believe in what Jesus has done for us and trust him. If this is something that you haven’t done before why not pop down to your local church, they will be able to help you get started.

Have a great week, and remember that the only way to be right with God is through having a trusting relationship with his son Jesus.
