Be careful of what you throw away

Picture yourself as a builder on a construction site. You have your hard-hat and hi-vis jacket and are happily building a wall. Mid-way through you have a brick that is a bit different. It is a bit mis-shaped and doesn't seem to fit neatly alongside the rest. You are busy so you quite understandably lob it onto the scrapheap and grab another brick.
It is only when the foreman comes along asking you if you have seen the priceless 'feature brick', crafted to be part of the centre piece by a world renowned sculptor that the penny drops. You realise the value of the brick that you chucked away.
This is exactly what our passage today is showing. We cannot understand the value of something if we do not know it's purpose or significance. As a result it is quite common for these misunderstood things to be undervalued or discarded.
Take your brain for example, I am sure you have heard the myth that you only use 10 percent of it (which for the record is completely un-true). This speculation is thought to have come about because at one point people only understood how a tenth of it worked! Only when we understand something can we see it's true value.
This is also true of Jesus. For those who are unfamiliar with him may just dismiss him as being a person from history, a trouble maker, a story or maybe just a swear word. But those of us with a relationship with him know there is much more to it than that. Like the brick he has been crafted by the worlds best sculptor, God. His value is unmeasurable, as he is the only person we can rely on to keep us safe in this life and the next.
This week think twice before you dismiss something or someone as being worthless rubbish. You never know what hidden treasure may be hidden in there! Have a great week.
