Basics in anatomy

We have many parts in the one body, and all these parts have different functions. In the same way, though we are many, we are one body in union with Christ, and we are all joined to each other as different parts of one body. So we are to use our different gifts in accordance with the grace that God has given us.

Romans 12 : 4 - 6 (GNB)

Our passage this week is looking at how we should live as part of a community of God's followers, the church.

One of the main things that we see in this passage is that although we are all different, and all unique this does not mean that we are all meant to be separate, working in our own separate worlds. In fact as we can see it is quite the opposite.

Just think of the variety of different people at your church (if you haven't got one check out churchrocks.net to find one near you). Despite the differences that exist there we are likened to individual organs in the same body. Each person’s contribution is different, each will use their own unique skills and talents given to them by God. Just think about it, if all of the organs in your body decided to be ears you would be quite a mess. To be human you need lots of different organs, such as a heart, lungs, brain and eyes. Without them all contributing together you are not really you. It is the same for the church. Churches need people with a variety of different talents, people that are able to work in unison together, each contributing towards a bigger project or goal.

One key thing that we need to take away from this is that to be one body we need to work together. It will not go well if some organs are trying to drive the body in one direction, where as other organs are fighting to go somewhere else. All that will happen is that you will have one tired aching body that is not really able to do anything.

In your church community let's focus on being a body that is in sync, a body that is working towards the same goal. When we do we will find that we are able to achieve much greater things quicker and more easily than when we all go off in our own directions. Have a great week.
